The Shops at Canton Crossing represents the transformation of a former oil refinery into a vibrant urban shopping destination thus reducing thousands of polluting car trips to surrounding counties. The center was designed to reflect the historic characteristics of the area’s industrial waterfront, while providing a pedestrian-friendly, walkable destination similar to the nearby Canton Square. Sustainable building materials including glass, natural stone, brick, distressed wood, steel and metal siding were used.
The presence of young families, working professionals, and empty nesters in the Southeast Baltimore community underscores the changing nature of its neighborhoods and the purpose of this development. Office towers, apartment buildings and warehouses are important to the city revitalization, but The Shops at Canton Crossing was built to improve the quality of life for the community.
This 410,000 square foot shopping center has attracted many quality retailers. For many of these national retailers, this is their first store in Baltimore City. The center is also home to many local tenants. Additionally, another 85,000 square feet of retail was completed in 2019, which is home to even more quality retailers.
A landscaped park with playground is centrally located between the shops and restaurants that features built-in concrete and wood benches, outlets to charge electronic devices, free WiFi, and a fenced-in playground.
